Cookies are pretty exciting 🍪

Cookie banners… less so. But bear with me for a moment (or skip to the next cookie).

We were on a team call reviewing a Google Ads account when we tested one of our own websites.

The cookie banner looked perfect.

Visitors could accept or decline. Everything appeared to work… but behind the scenes, Google wasn’t receiving the right signals to properly utilize the cookie consent.

One setting wasn’t enabled and we fixed it in a few minutes. But it made me think. Which can be dangerous.

🍪 If it’s this easy for us to miss, how many businesses think they’re compliant when they aren’t?

🍪 How many times will I write cookie in this post?

That’s becoming a much bigger problem because cookie consent isn’t just about Google anymore.

Businesses across the U.S. are being sued over how websites collect visitor data. In some states, plaintiffs are relying not only on modern privacy laws but also decades-old wiretapping statutes that were written long before tracking pixels and analytics existed.

The outcomes vary by state and by court.

But one thing is clear: installing a cookie banner doesn’t automatically reduce that risk.

And that’s why we’re having internal calls about cookies. We’re trying to protect our clients and get ahead of these problems before they become bigger.
